Hangs the layers below like fabric in the wind — a flag, a banner, a curtain

Pin the picture up by one edge and let the wind take it. Waves roll away from the held edge and grow as they go, so a flag stays still at the pole and snaps at its free end; the folds catch the light, brighter where they face it and shaded where they turn away, which is what makes it read as fabric rather than a ripple. Raise the gusts and the wind stops being even, bending the crests and swelling them in patches.
